고길천의 강정 기록화 <붉은 구럼비> A Solo Exhibition by KOH Gil-cheon 2022.08.02(화)-08.26(금) 예술공간이아 전시실2 10:00-18:00 매주 월요일 휴관, 무료 ※ 초대일시 08.06(토) 16:00 고길천의 강정 기록화 <붉은 구럼비>는 총 84점이다. 아크릴 물감, 오일바, 사진 콜라주 등 혼합재료를 사용한 대형 크기의 판넬 작품 11점과 종이 위에 목탄으로 그린 73점으로 구성되어 있다. 2013년부터 올해까지 10년에 걸쳐 제작되었다. <붉은 구럼비>는 해군기지를 건설하기 위해 강정마을에서 벌어진 국가폭력에 대한 증언이자, 이에 저항하는 사람들의 치열한 사랑 이야기다. 제주해군기지는 2007년 강정마을 유치 공표 후 2012년 구럼비 바위를 폭파하고 건설을 시작하여 2016년 완공되었다. 해군기지가 완공되기까지 10여년간 반대하는 선주민들을 중심으로 한 격렬한 저항이 있었고, 완공 이후 국내외 종교인, 사회 운동가, 예술인들을 중심으로 반대 활동이 지속되고 있다. 무력으로 준공된 제주해군기지에 대한 사람들의 분노는 강정마을과 구럼비, 제주를 사랑하는 만큼, 현대사회 민주주의에 대한 믿음이 무너진 만큼 거세게 분출되었다. 저항하는 사람들은 용역깡패와 해군, 경찰의 폭력에 몸이 찢기고 멍들고 이가 부서지는 고통을 감내해야 했다. 공무집행방해죄로 연행되고 수감되는 일상을 살았다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이들은 죽음의 문턱에서 되돌아와 또다시 고통을 마주하고, 새로운 시작을 준비한다. 상처받지 않기 때문이 아니다. 두렵지 않기 때문이 아니다. 구럼비 바위 주름마다 켜켜이 쌓여 있는 추억과 우리땅 삶의 터전에 대한 사랑이, 더불어 의지하며 함께 살아왔던 구럼비 안팎의 작고 다양한 생명들에 대한 사랑이, 평화와 인권 그리고 미래에 대한 사랑이 너무나 깊고 넓기 때문이었다. 2022년 8월, 전시와 함께 발행되는 책에는 84점 도판을 모두 수록했고 구럼비 폭파 전 강정마을에서 진행된 고길천 작가의 그래피티 작업, 인터뷰 등 고길천 작가를 중심으로 한 해군기지 반대 운동 관련 자료를 모았다. KOH Gil-cheon's Gangjeong Documentary Drawings and Paintings ⟨Red Gureombi⟩ is a series of 84 documentary drawings and painting. Eleven of the works in the series are large-scale panels of mixed materials such as acrylic paints, oil bars, and photo collages. The other 73 works are charcoal on paper. They were created over a period of 10 years, from 2013 to the present. ⟨Red Gureombi⟩ bears witness to the national government's violence against Gangjeong Village in building the naval base. The artworks tell a fierce love story about those who stand in protest and resistance. The government announced the Jeju Naval Base in 2007, broke ground and blasted the Gureombi Rock in 2012, and completed construction in 2016. I those 10 or so years that the base was under construction, there was fierce resistance against the naval base. After the base was completed, the protests continued with religious leaders, social activists, and artists, from Korea and abroad. The people's anger at the use of brute force in building the Jeju Naval Base erupted fiercely in love and support of Gangjeong Village, Gureombi and Jeju. Its passionate expression seemed to reflect the disappointment of witnessing democratic ideals fail in contemporary society. Those who resisted were beaten, bruised and crushed by strongmen-for-hire, as well as members of the Korean Navy and the National Police. Arrests and imprisonment for obstruction of justice was common and daily. Nevertheless, protesters return from the brink of death to suffer again willingly and ready a new beginning. It is not that they are impervious to pain and suffering. Nor are they undaunted. It is because they love their homeland, down to every nook and cranny of the Gureombi Rock. They love all the precious lives lived together there. They love peace, human rights, and their future. Alongside the exhibition slated for August 2022, a book will be published featuring all 84 artworks, including the graffiti and interviews by the artist KOH Gil-cheon at Gangjeong Village before Gureombi was blasted.
